A Sustainable Approach to Build Insulated External Timber Frame Walls for Passive Houses Using Natural and Waste Materials

This paper presents structures of timber-framed walls designed for passive houses, using natural and waste resources as insulation materials, such wool, wood fibers, ground paper, reeds (Phragmites communis), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) wastes. The systems stud composed wool–ABS composite boards five types fillers (wool, ABS, reeds) were investigated to reach U-value requirements houses. wall at a thickness 175 mm, including gypsum board internal lining oriented strand (OSB) the exterior one. testing protocol thermal properties simulated conditions indoor outdoor temperatures during winter summer seasons HFM-Lambda laboratory equipment. In situ measurements U-values determined experimental time, when temperature differences between outside inside exceeded 10 °C. results recorded 0.20 W/m2K 0.35 indicate that proposed are energy-efficient houses placed in temperate-continental areas. vapour flow rate calculation does not presence condensation mm thick structures, which proves selected materials prone degradation due condensation. research is aligned international trend civil engineering, design construction low-energy buildings on one hand use environmentally friendly or recycled other.
